What is Dermatosurgery?
Dermatosurgery is both and all surgical practice used in medical cosmetology on the skin and associated structures. These manoeuvres are carried out by trained dermatologists with advanced knowledge of skin anatomy and experience in complex surgical techniques.
Use of Dermatosurgery
Dermatosurgery is commonly used for:-
- Treating benign and malignant skin lesions
- Removing skin growths, warts, or cysts
- Hair restoration procedures
- Cosmetic surgery, including scar revision and skin tightening.
- Addressing chronic skin conditions that require surgical intervention
Types of Dermatosurgeries Offered at Dermavision - The Skin Clinic
- Excision Surgery - Diagnosis and treatment of benign cutaneous lesions such as moles, warts, cysts, or skin tags. The excised tissue is generally sent for biopsy to rule out the malignancy.
- Cryosurgery - Cryosurgery applies extremely low temperatures, usually liquid nitrogen, and an associated thermal removal of abnormal skin lesions. It is also extensively used for the treatment of warts, actinic Keratosis and other superficial skin lesions.
- Electrosurgery - Electrosurgery is the application of high-frequency electric currents for the destruction of diseased tissue. It is also useful for the treatment of warts, skin tags, and small tumors.
- Laser Surgery - Sophisticated laser technology is applied for highly accurate clearing of skin lesions, tattoo removal and removal of scarring and wrinkles due to resurfacing. Laser surgery is painless, passive, and recovery-friendly.
- Scar Revision Surgery - Procedures for scar revision (e.g., Z-plasty or laser resurfacing) are performed to enhance the appearance of scars on patients with aesthetically displeasing scars due to injury, surgery, or acne.
- Hair Transplantation - Hair transplantation is a common Dermatosurgical treatment for alopecia or thinning hairs. Two very common procedures, Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), are described.
- Nail Surgery - Including the trimming of or the treatment for ingrown toenails, fungal infection, nail pathology, etc.
- Skin Grafting - Skin grafting is the transplantation of normal skin, to burn areas, wound sites or surgical incisions. This procedure promotes healing and minimizes scarring.
- Mohs’ Surgery - As the most accurate technique for the treatment of skin cancer, Mohs surgery provides, as an absolute, the complete removal of the cancerous cells without any residual normal tissue for excisions.
Benefits of Dermatosurgeries
Dermatosurgeries have a vast therapeutic and aesthetic potential:-
- Precise Diagnosis & Treatment - Surgical interventions are implemented for accurate diagnosis and efficient therapeutic management of complex skin lesions.
- Minimally Invasive Options - Several Dermatosurgeries are minimally invasive and provide a short recovery period and little pain.
- Aesthetic Enhancements - Procedures such as scar revision, mole removal, and hair transplantation improve physical appearance, boosting confidence.
- Effective Management of Chronic Conditions - Certain psoriasis or eczema can be treated by surgical intervention to relieve symptoms1.
- Improved Quality of Life - Patients also get relieved from pain, discomfort, and social shame as a result of untreated skin lesions.
Preparation for Dermatosurgery
Patients are asked to perform the following protocol before the Dermatosurgical procedure:-
